The Ramapo Tomato is a red, ripe, juicy jersey tomato. Sweet with a low acid taste wrapped in a skin thick enough to hold the flavor yet thin enough to please the lips. The Ramapo tomato is a garden tomato with taste as good or better than what others call heirlooms. The Ramapo is special for it is also a tomato that resists disease and produces well in our heavy Central Jersey soils.

Thirty four years ago I began a search for tomato varieties for the gardens of my friends and neighbors. Varieties had to be disease resistant, mature in 70-79 days, sweet, juicy, yield well, resist splitting and grow easily in Central Jersey gardens Many varieties failed to make the grade.

The Ramapo tomato was selected to fill space in my greenhouses. Thousands of Ramapo tomato seedlings have been sold to my customers. Then one year I could not find the seeds. My search revealed that the parental seed source was lost and the Ramapo ceased to exist. Scam artists attempted to sell seeds taken directly from Ramapo tomatoes with realizing that this tomato could not be reproduced in that way. Some were fooled—but not my customers.

Now the Dr. Pollack’s variety has been reconstructed and a limited amount of real Ramapo seeds are available, I am growing them once again.
